On 16th of October, the rehearsals with the school’s piano accompanists will take place exclusively with the participants of category 4. Rehearsals for the other categories will start from Monday 17th of October and the division will be announced here.

Category IV:
The competition is open to children and young people up to 20 years of age and will be held in 4 categories:
Category 1: 11 years and younger
Category 2: 12 to 14 years
Category 3: 15 to 17 years
Category 4: 18 to 20 years
The cut-off date for the completed age group is the day of the start of the competition (16th of October 2022). If desired, the contestants can start in a higher age group.
The competition will be held in two rounds in categories 1 to 3, and in three rounds in category 4.
The program is to be performed from memory (exception: duo sonatas) and without repetitions (exception: excerpted baroque sonatas).
The competition will be held in public in all rounds (concert dress is desired). It will take place in the rooms of the Saxon State Grammar School for Music Dresden and will be broadcast live (link to be announced).
Piano accompanists will be available for the competition.
For the use of piano accompaniment, a contribution of 15€ must be paid at the same time as the registration fee. This amount is available for the preparation of the pianist. This amount will be forfeited if our pianist is not used. It is possible to bring accompanists at your own expense.
Costs for piano accompaniment and accompanying persons will not be covered.
The prize-winners are obliged to perform at concerts within the framework of the competition without remuneration. The participants have no claims arising from possible audio and video recordings. There is no entitlement to a recording.

First held in 1998, the competition is held every three years, with a great international response, under this year’s artistic direction of the solo cellist of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Prof. Norbert Anger, in four age categories for children and young people up to 20 years of age.
The competition is financed by the Saxon State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs and supported by the Dresden University of Music as well as the Friends of the Saxon State High School of Music Dresden e.V. and other sponsors.
From the 2nd round on, the competition will be held in the buildings of the Sächsisches Landesgymnasium für Musik in Dresden-Blasewitz. The public auditions can be followed live online from the 17th – 21st of October 2022 (link to be announced). This year’s Dotzauer Competition for Young Cellists will culminate with a prize-winners‘ concert on the 22nd of October 2022 at 11:00 A.M. in the concert hall of the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber at Wettiner Platz 13.
Justus Johann Friedrich Dotzauer, born in Thuringia on January 20, 1783, learned to play several instruments at a young age, including the piano, violin, double bass, horn and clarinet, as well as the cello, under the tutelage of Johann Sebastian Bach. After two years of intensive study with Johann Jacob Kriegk, Dotzauer made his debut as a cellist in a court concert and received his first appointment in the Meiningen court orchestra.
In 1811, at the age of 22, he transferred to the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, where he also became part of the initial lineup of the Gewandhaus Quartet, founded in 1808. After further years of in-depth musical training, Dotzauer accepted a position with the Dresden Hofkapelle and served as the orchestra’s principal cellist from 1821 until his retirement. During these 29 years, he also composed and is still known today for his numerous etudes as well as instructional pieces and earned great merit through the publication of the 6 solo suites by Johann Sebastian Bach.
The International Dotzauer Competition for Young Cellists will be held for the eighth time at the Sächsisches Landesgymnasium für Musik Carl Maria von Weber Dresden from 17th – 22nd of October 2022. Justus Johann Friedrich Dotzauer (1783-1860) served as principal cellist at the Dresden Hofkapelle from 1811 until his death. The extensive study works of the composer and instrumentalist belong to the compulsory literature of every cellist.

Zur redaktionellen Aufgabenerfüllung in den sozialen Netzwerken verarbeiten wir Daten von Personen, die mit uns in Interaktion treten. Hierbei ist eine temporäre Datenspeicherung notwendig. Die Speicherung erfolgt auf einem Server, der seinen Standort in der europäischen Union hat und umfasst: Profil- und Accountnamen sowie Profilbild, Inhalt der Anfrage, Anzahl der Follower und der Profile, denen das Profil folgt, sowie neueste Posts/Tweets. Die Daten werden sechs Monate gespeichert.
